Grow Your Own

KIBSD has 2 types of Grow Your Own Programs: General Education to Special Education (GETS), and Teacher Apprenticeship.

Details for what you need for each program are in the Applicant Informational Sheets. The first step is to complete the Interest Form.

GETS
The KIBSD GETS Program is for current District General Education teachers who want to become a Special Education teacher in the District’s Special Services Department. Teachers will work through an approved study program to obtain their Special Education credential with the State of Alaska Education Department. 

Teacher Apprenticeship
The Teacher Apprenticeship program is available for current District paraprofessionals who want to become a teacher. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Employees will work through a program at the University of Alaska Anchorage while they continue to work at KIBSD to obtain their Teaching Certificate with the State of Alaska Education Department.
