North Star School Update from Superintendent Dr. Mika 2:05 pm

Nov 30, 2022

KIBSD Families,

I wanted to update all our families and staff about an incident at North Star Elementary today.

At 10:12 am North Star administration notified KIBSD Central Office that there was a suspicious package left outside of the school. KPD and AST were immediately notified. The school was placed in shelter in place away from the suspicious package. North Star students and staff were evacuated by bus to Bayside Fire Department by mutual decision of law enforcement and the District. Families were reunified with students at Bayside. The professionalism of staff, law enforcement, fire department, and USCG partners allowed this effort to go as smoothly and timely as possible. We thank our North Star parents for their patience and understanding.

I want to reassure our families and staff that safety will always be our number one priority. Additionally, I’m committed to communicating more details as they become available. At this time, AST is requesting that the community stay clear of North Star Elementary as it remains an active scene.

The District will be working with our emergency response partners to conduct an after-action review. This will give us insight into what went well and what needs to be changed in the event of a future emergency in the District.

I want to share a heartfelt thank you to the North Star staff who worked to keep students calm and safe.

I know that I’ll be hugging my son especially hard when I see him once this event is over.

Sincerely,
Cyndy Mika, Superintendent
