Reconfiguration FAQ's

When will teachers know their school or class assignment?
Teachers were notified of their initial assignments on March 13, following the procedures agreed upon with the teachers’ union. There may be some additional movement based on final enrollment and resignations before the start of the school year, but teachers received initial placements before spring break.

How can parents help with the reconfiguration process?
Parent-teacher organizations (PTAs/PTOs) are organizing some events for students in the coming months. The district will also advertise volunteer opportunities as soon as they are available. We anticipate a need for volunteers at the end of the school year to helping teachers to pack up and move classrooms. If you are interested, be sure to complete a volunteer application: https://www.kibsd.org/volunteers/ and then complete the volunteer survey https://forms.office.com/r/AcZ9UN6QFX. If you are a volunteer coordinator who works with a service organization or a group, you can apply yourself as a volunteer, and then you can register your group and indicate your area of interest on the volunteer survey.

How can families lend their voice throughout the process?
There will be a community conversation on April 10 at Kodiak College. You can also answer the weekly survey question in the newsletter, which also includes an open-ended question for feedback that comes back to the reconfiguration leadership team. You can always email centraloffice@kibsd.org with other ideas, suggestions, questions, or concerns.

What should I do if I am a Peterson family who wants my child to attend one of the consolidated elementary schools? Or if I’m a family who wants my child to attend the K-5 school at Peterson?
You would complete the exemption form available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. It’s important to note that exemptions/waivers are not determined until the week before school starts, because they are based on space and capacity at each school. It’s also important to know that those requesting a waiver are responsible for providing their student’s transportation.

When will we be able to visit my child’s new school?
PTAs and PTOs are arranging evening/weekend open house events on April 11-12 for families to explore their new schools. Because of many pending classroom changes, families won’t be able to tour actual classrooms until family conferences at the start of the school year.

How will class lists be determined?
Teachers will meet in grade-level teams this spring to make recommendations based on student needs and to collaboratively balance classes as much as possible. Class lists will be posted in the fall.

Will drop-off and pick-up times change for next year?
Yes, slightly. Elementary schools will have staggered start times based on the bus route schedule, and secondary schools will have a slightly later start & end time as a result.

    • East Elementary starts at 7:45 and ends at 2:45 (1:45 for K-1 and on early release Wednesdays)
    • Main Elementary starts at 8:00 and ends at 3:00 (2:00 on early release Wednesdays)
    • Peterson Elementary starts at 7:50 and ends at 2:50 (1:50 on early release Wednesdays)
    • Kodiak Middle & Kodiak High Schools start at 8:45 and end at 3:45 (2:45 on early release Wednesdays)

What will class sizes be like next year?
Class sizes are limited by the pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) that is set by the KIBSD Board of Education. The ratios are currently set at 19:1 for grades K-2, 25:1 for grade 3, and 30:1 for grades 4-5. These ratios are used to determine the number of classrooms and teachers, based on student enrollment. Within these parameters, schools make every effort to balance class sizes while meeting students’ needs.

Thank you, Artists & Voters!

The response to the mascot contest was exciting! Thank you to all of the artists that submitted designs, and thank you to everyone who voted! The winning design was a collaborative design by Princess (Cess) Lubuguin and Destiny Fitzgerald. Several of you commented that you liked the simple design and the use of blue & gold in this one, saying that it would translate well to spirit wear and other designs. Some of you also noted that the paws in the original design were not bear paws, so we made sure to adjust that part for accuracy. Thank you for helping to collaborate on this design with your input and for making sure we were consistently (and correctly) representing Kodiak brown bears!

School Waviers/Exemptions

Throughout the elementary reconfiguration discussion, there were references to the district waiver process. The waiver process is how a family can submit a request for their student to attend a school other than the school they would attend based on the school boundary zones. In the coming year, the waiver process will be the same as in previous years. The waiver application form is found within the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please see the flyer below for important reminders and an outline of the process to submit a waiver request. Note that waivers are not guaranteed, and because they are based on space and availability, they are not determined until the week before school begins.
