School Closure Recommendation Update January 13, 2025

Jan 13, 2025

Dear Kodiak Island Borough School District Families, Staff, and Community Members,

As we navigate the significant financial challenges facing our district, I want to ensure that you have the most current and accurate information ahead of tonight’s Town Hall Meeting. Transparency is a top priority as we work through this process, and I appreciate your continued engagement and understanding during this difficult time.

After further analysis and deliberation, the District Administration has determined that Peterson Elementary is not a viable option for closure. This decision was based on several critical factors, including:

  • Transportation Costs: The cost of transporting students from Peterson Elementary to other schools would significantly reduce potential savings.
  • Student Density: A high density of students live within walking distance of Peterson Elementary, making closure particularly disruptive for these families.
  • Bus Route Durations: The time students would spend on bus routes if Peterson were closed would exceed district expectations, impacting their daily routines and overall well-being.
  • Growth of the US Coast Guard (USCG): Over the next 5 to 10 years, the presence of the US Coast Guard in our community is expected to grow significantly, bringing more families to the area near Peterson Elementary. Keeping the school open will be crucial to meeting the educational needs of these students and avoiding additional strain on other schools in the district.

While the Board of Education has the ultimate authority to decide which school to close, based on these considerations, my recommendation to the Board will be to close North Star Elementary.

This recommendation was not made lightly. We know the decision to close any school is deeply impactful to students, families, and staff. Our focus remains on making the best possible decision for the long-term sustainability of the district while continuing to prioritize the needs of our students.

We invite you to participate in tonight’s Town Hall Meeting at 6:00 PM in the Kodiak High School Cafeteria Commons to share your thoughts, ask questions, and provide input. Your voice matters, and we are committed to hearing and considering the perspectives of our community as the Board moves toward a decision.

Thank you for your understanding and engagement as we work together to address these challenges. We are committed to keeping you informed and to making decisions that support the mission of the Kodiak Island Borough School District: to engage and empower all students for growth and success.

Sincerely,

Cyndy A. Mika
Superintendent
