School Closures and Delays

How are decisions made?

The decision to either delay school or close entirely for the day is made by the Superintendent of Schools. Before the decision is made, the Superintendent gathers information from emergency services and our bussing company.

What is a two-hour delay?

  • A two-hour delay allows additional time for plowing/sanding and reviewing conditions.
  • Morning bus pick-up times are two hours later than usual.
  • School begins two hours later than the regular start time. • Schools dismiss at the normal time, unless stated otherwise. • PreK morning session may be cancelled (please check with your school).

How will you be notified?

Delay or closure announcements will be posted on:

  • KIBSD Facebook page.
  • SchoolMessenger notifications to families.
  • Local radio station.

We strive to notify families as soon as possible in the event of a delay or closure. If you have not been notified, please assume classes are following a normal schedule. Please contact your school with questions.

What can you do?

  • Confirm that your contact information and emergency contact information is up to date in PowerSchool.
  • Have a backup plan for childcare.
  • Know your bus pick-up time; if there is a two-hour delay, it will shift accordingly.
  • Dress your children for winter weather.

Is there anything else you should know?

If schools remain open, and parents/guardians feel the conditions are unsafe, you may keep your student at home. Absences or late arrivals will be excused. Please notify your school. Due to state requirements, any full-day closures will be made up later in the year.
