Joyce Blair, Principal

Joyce Blair will serve as Kodiak High School Principal and districtwide English Language Acquisition Coordinator. She is also a graduate from Kodiak High School. Ms. Blair began her education career in 1992 as an aide. In addition to being an aide, Ms. Blair substituted, taught general education grades 1st – 3rd, Kindergarten – 6th grade in the English Language Acquisition Program, and taught as a summer schoolteacher for pre-school, as well as for 12–19-year-old at-risk students. Ms. Blair has also taught as an adjunct at the University of Alaska Anchorage Kodiak College. She served as an assistant principal at Kodiak High School. Ms. Blair graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from the Alaska Pacific University. She completed her Principal Certificate from Arkansas State University.

Kathryn Symmes, Assistant Principal

Kathryn Symmes has served the students, staff, and community of the Kodiak Island Borough School District since January 2004. Ms. Symmes taught and coached at Old Harbor School, Kodiak Middle School, and Kodiak High School before becoming KHS assistant principal in 2020. Ms. Symmes graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics/Chemistry Education, from Lesley University with a master’s degree in Mathematics Education, and from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership.  Ms. Symmes currently holds an Alaska Principal Certificate and Alaska Teaching Certificate.

Matt Bieber, Assistant Principal

Matt Bieber began his education career in 1997 as a science teacher in Missouri. Over the course of his career in education he has taught students at the middle school, high school, and college level. Mr. Bieber received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Central Missouri and his Masters in Educational Technology from the University of Missouri. Currently, Mr. Bieber holds an Alaska Principal Certificate from Eastern Washington University and an Alaska Teaching Certificate.
