KHS talent give ‘superior’ performances at State music festival

Earlier this month, 16 students from the Kodiak High School Music Department competed in the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2017 State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

“Our students performed well and were well received,” said Adela Martinez, KHS choir teacher.

These students earned “Superior” ratings during the state contest:
  • Katie McKinney and Nia Pristas - Musical Theatre Vocal Ensemble for “Stepsisters’ Lament” 
  • Timothy Bohac - Musical Theatre Solo for “Bring Him Home”
  • Jessica Graves, Jessica Mendez, Katie McKinney, Nia Pristas, Mariah Cumplido, Lauren Monzon, Tanner Purdy, Grace Westling, Kala Abell, Bradly Cobban, Sandra Dorado and Jamie Lee Fabricante - Vocal Large Ensemble for “You Are My Music”
  • Rafael Bitanga - Cello Solo
  • ChellaRae Nugent - Bass Solo
The two-day competition included the following categories: Baritone/Euphonium Cello, Clarinet, Double Reed, Flute, French Horn, Guitar, High String, Music Theatre Vocal Solo, Percussion Solo, Percussion Ensemble, Piano, Saxophone, String Bass, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Vocal Small Ensemble (2-4), Vocal Large Ensemble (5-16), Vocal Solo, Brass Ensemble, Harp (High String), Jazz Instrumental Solo, Jazz Instrumental Ensemble, Jazz Vocal Solo, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Musical Theatre Vocal Ensemble, Musical Theatre Vocal Solo, Show Choir, String EnsembleVocal Small ensemble (2-4), Vocal Large Ensemble (5-16), Vocal Solo, Woodwind Ensemble, World Instrument Ensemble and World Instrument Solo.

A Command Performance event also was held in the East Anchorage High School auditorium both days of the competition. Auditions for the Command Performances were held throughout each day of the festival in the UAA Fine Arts building on the UAA campus.
