KIBSD superintendent finalists forum set for March 6

Next week — March 6-7 — the three finalists in the Kodiak Island Borough School District’s search for a new superintendent will visit Kodiak for on-site interviews. The highlight of the two-day trip will be a community candidate forum on Monday, March 6, from 7-8:30 PM, in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium.
The candidates will take center stage during the forum, which will be emceed by Timi Tullis, director of board development and field services for the Association of Alaska School Boards. The KIBSD Board of Education enlisted the AASB last fall to help in the search for a new district superintendent. While in Kodiak, the finalists also will tour the island’s community and visit its schools.
The three finalists in the KIBSD superintendent search are:
- Larry LeDoux – A life-long resident of Kodiak, LeDoux is a previous teacher, principal and former superintendent of KIBSD. He also served as Commissioner of Education for the state of Alaska under the Palin and Parnell administrations. He holds a Doctorate in Alaska Native Education & Digital Learning from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and currently holds an Alaska superintendent certification.
- Cyndy Mika – Currently assistant superintendent of Instruction for Little Elm ISD in Little Elm, Texas, Mika has worked in administration for Little Elm ISD for the past 10 years and prior to that taught elementary and middle school for five years. She holds a Masters of Educational Administration from University of Texas at Tyler and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Dallas Baptist University. She also has a Texas superintendent credential.
- Glen Szymoniak – Currently superintendent for North Slope Borough School District, Szymoniak also was superintendent for seven years for McCall-Donnelly School District in McCall, ID. Additionally, he worked for the Kenai Borough School District for nearly 20 years in the capacity of teacher, principal and central office administrator. He has an Alaska superintendent certificate and holds a Masters in Education from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The Board intends to make an announcement on their choice of a new superintendent following final deliberations on Wednesday, March 8. The new superintendent is expected to start on or before July 1.
