KHS ShakesBears place in top 10 at 2019 ASAA State DDF Tournament

Facing over 25 schools from around the state, the KHS ShakesBears placed in the top 10 of their fields yet again.  Here are the results from the 2019 ASAA State DDF Tournament.

8th place (tied) Reader’s Theatre
7th place Duet Acting: Maryssa Abston and Ella Spence
5th place Duet Acting: Felix Lewis and Acacia Birbilas
4th place Solo Acting: Acacia Birbilas
3rd place Dramatic Interp: Derek Rocheleau

and....

1st place Humorous Interp: Felix Lewis! (A unanimous decision by the judges which is extremely rare at drama competition!)

Felix was also voted by the competitors and judges to give a Command Performance at the Awards Assembly. A big honor.

KHS ShakesBears were also nominated by fellow schools for the Sportsmanship Award (but didn’t ultimately win—the honor went to well-deserved Kotzebue).

As far as Coach Griffin has been able to research, this is the first time Kodiak has placed 1st in DDF, in at least 30 years—maybe ever. And this may be the first time that KHS has placed in multiple events, and had multiple finalists, at State.

Kodiak was among five other schools making their first appearance at State in over 20 years— and of those schools, only Kodiak made it to the final round.

A 1st place win for Felix Lewis means that he qualifies for the National competition this June in Dallas! And Derek Rocheleau’s 3rd place should qualify him too.  Kodiak has never been represented at the national level before—and now we might have 2 students there!
