Puffin News November 7, 2019

We’re thankful for you!

We have really been celebrating hands on learning!  We concluded Fire Safety Month and our visits to the firehouse, and students had a chance to explore the Hazard House - a hands on learning display, presented by the Coast Guard Fire Station.  Mrs. Rose’s class went to Jewel Beach to search for fossils, and the entire 4th grade got to dissect salmon.  Many of our classrooms had some fun fall lessons based on pumpkins, whether it was studying the life cycle or counting and collecting seeds.  Learning is always fun here at Peterson Elementary!

Mrs. Noe's third-graders wrapped up their ''All About Pumpkins" research unit last week. They counted seeds, measured circumferences, weighed and determined if pumpkins sink or float. They also learned all about the lifecycle and parts of a pumpkin.

Counselor's Corner

November is here! We've been learning about feelings in our Kinder - 2nd grade classes, using our Feeling Buddies curriculum through Conscious Discipline. In 3rd - 5th grade, we're learning about emotions, coping skills, and respect. Students practiced many different coping skills recently and I encourage you to ask about this at home. We've also been sharing many different ways we show respect in our school, our homes, our community and to ourselves. This month, our breathing exercises are focusing on gratitude, reminding everyone that we can be grateful all year round. Practicing gratitude is shown to have many benefits, including better health, so find a time to ask your child about something they are grateful for, maybe at the dinner table, or in the car, or at bedtime. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out at Breanna.Peterson@Kibsd.org or (907) 481-6400. Thank you,
Breanna Peterson. School Counselor
