KMS and Island Trails Network Marine Debris Clean-up Project
KMS students from Mr. Adams’ Discovering Kodiak class teamed up with Island Trails Network for a marine debris clean-up project. Over the course of 2 weeks, teams of students combed the beaches of Kodiak collecting everything from plastic bottles to old toothbrushes.
Marine debris detracts from the natural beauty of Kodiak and poses a threat to wildlife through entanglement and ingestion. Island Trails Network has been conducting marine debris clean-up and removal from Kodiak shorelines since 2007, and has employed hundreds of volunteers in cleaning up nearly a half million pounds of marine debris in the past decade. These field trips introduced students to concepts of environmental stewardship and resource protection, as well as giving them an opportunity to have a positive impact on their environment.
