Whale Watch News October 7, 2019

From the Principal

Our school year is off to a great start. We have been working hard at school-wide expectations and keeping our school safe.

It was great to see so many families join us at our open house.

We will be having a PTA meeting on October 17 at 5:30 PM. We hope to see you there. PTA is selling spirit wear every Thursday at 7:30 AM.

Please let me know if you have any celebrations, needs, or concerns.

Thank you,

Mrs. Hietala

From the Classroom

Fourth grade started the year with a hike up Old Woman mountain for a team building adventure! Students made it to the top and enjoyed lunch at the lake. They also got to explore Kodiak's plant life. Alaska is our focus for social studies. We are talking about local geography and cultures plus the regions in our state. Their math focus has started strong with strategies for multiplication and we are quickly moving into division and fractions. Many students have shown interest in Battle of the Books so they are reading, reading, reading! Be looking for more information about reading coming soon.

Fifth graders are working as a team to "beat the calculator" a math Work Place that has students' mental math strategies dueling against a calculator to solve multi-digit multiplication expressions.

Second graders are working on building a strong community of learners, increasing their reading stamina, using a number rack to solve addition and subtraction problems to 20, and practicing different breathing strategies and movements to help us calm down or focus for work. Ask your child to show you "balloon breathing ". It is a good way to make you smile!
