KIBSD Rural Schools Reading English & Alutiiq Development (READ) Project

As part of The Alaska Comprehensive Literacy State Development Project, the KIBSD Rural Schools Reading English & Alutiiq Development (READ) Project created and distributed home Literacy Kits to children ages birth to 18 in each of our rural communities (Akhiok, Chiniak, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, and Port Lions). Each Literacy Kit for children ages birth to age six includes books and fun interactive items designed around a theme. For children in 3rd through 12th grades, Literacy Kits are built around the student’s interests shared through a Reading Survey they completed this January. These kits will include fiction, non-fiction, word games, mad libs, and other items. Our goal is to provide materials for children in our villages and communities to engage in rich language activities while at home.

This was our Year 1 Literacy Kit dispersion and we will continue this through the 5 years of the grant. Although the distribution of our Literacy Kits was not as expected, with large celebrations and fanfare at each school, our kits came at an important time where they could help bolster the efforts of our rural teachers, staff, and families in continuing our students’ education at home. Our teachers and staff were able to enjoy, from a distance, seeing smiles on their students’ and their siblings’ faces as they delivered the kits around the communities.
