  • Alaska Day

    Alaska Day is celebrated every October 18 in recognition of the formal transfer of the Territory from Russia to the United States. Students in Mrs. Griffin, Ms. Jessica and Mrs. Nelson’s classes celebrated by making flags, going on parade through the halls, and watching a reenactment of the purchase of Alaska.

    Kodiak Island has a heritage and history rich with traditions from the many cultures that have shaped its existence. From the Alutiiq people to Russian settlers to the more recent Filipino immigrant community, all of these cultures have left an indelible impression on what it means to be Kodiakan.

    During the April regular meeting of the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education, the Kodiak United State Coast Guard Auxiliary was there to hand out awards to KIBSD students who won the annual “Kids Don’t Float” poster contest.

  • East Elementary Kindergarteners ROCK!

    Kindergarteners in Melissa Griffin’s East Elementary classroom have left their mark around Kodiak Island — literally. Recently, Griffin’s students participated in the Kodiak Island Rocks campaign “to decorate rocks and hide them in various locations to brighten someone's day.”

  • Munartet arts, culture symposium set for April 8

    The Munartet Project will hold its first arts and culture symposium this Saturday, April 8. Activities will be held at the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium from 9AM-5PM. Dubbed “a day to celebrate, learn and explore Kodiak's arts and culture,” the symposium has a full schedule of events for the entire family, even little ones ages 4 and up.

    Beginning Tuesday, March 28, Kodiak Island Borough School District students in grades 3-10 will take the state of Alaska’s new summative assessment — the Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools, or PEAKS.

  • Ocean Rowe wins KIBSD district-wide spelling bee

    Eighteen students from Kodiak Island Borough School District town and rural schools competed Feb. 21 for the KIBSD District-wide Spelling Bee crown. East Elementary fifth-grader Ocean Rowe came out on top, but it was the battle for the runner-up spot where the drama really unfolded.

  • East Elementary Kindergarteners celebrate Chinese New Year

    Kindergarteners at East Elementary celebrated the beginning of the year of the Rooster last Friday with a Chinese New Year parade through the school. Students donned homemade signs — red plastic plates with paper roosters glued to them — as they wound their way through the halls of East.

  • East Elementary holds successful holiday canned food drive

    Santa’s elves were very busy this month at East Elementary School. Teaming up with the Kodiak High School FFA, East faculty, staff and students held a holiday canned food drive. The class bringing in the largest amount of food in pounds wins a pizza party with the KHS FFA, and all food received will be donated to the Kodiak Island Food Bank.
