  • Old Harbor Swim Trip by Clair Taylor

    This year, 4th-7th grade students from Old Harbor School fundraised and received donations to go on a class swim trip to Kodiak. Everyone had multiple opportunities to learn and have fun, including: horseback riding, a farm tour, visiting the Baronof museum, Fish and Wildlife Center, and getting a tour of the Kodiak College. This trip is one that students will remember for the rest of their lives.

  • Watching the life cycle of a moth.

    After learning about the life cycle of butterflies in the classroom, second-grader Taylor Amodo and Kindergartener Kaliyah Amodo of Akhiok were fortunate to see the process for themselves.

  • Akhiok student receives multiple awards for science project.

    After winning the Alutiiq Cultural Champion Ribbon at the Rural Schools Regional Science Fair, fourth-grade student S. Simeonoff of Akhiok attended the Alaska State Science and Engineering Fair in Anchorage. Simeonoff’s Alutiiq Halibut Hook Project placed second in his category at the fair and received the Alaska Fly Fishers Annual Award of Merit.

  • Larsen Bay students expand their learning environment.

    Until recently, Larsen Bay School had one small welding booth that could only accommodate one student at a time. As the number of welders at the school increased, students had to do what village folks do- they got a little creative.

  • Rural school students compete in ASAA Mix-6 Volleyball Tournament

    Over the weekend students from Akhiok, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Karluk, and Ouzinkie flew to Anchorage to compete in the 2017 ASAA Mix-6 Volleyball Tournament.

  • Welding students volunteer for community service project.

    Students of the Akhiok School welding program volunteered to do a community service project for the construction crew installing the new water tank system. They welded placards for valve purpose, and placards for the directional flow of water.

  • Rural Schools Village schools receive new playgrounds.

    Recess just got a whole lot better for students in Akhiok, Chiniak, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, and Port Lions. Over the summer each school received new playground equipment.
