Maritime Science & Tech I & II
Grade Level(s): 10-12; Year-long course; Maritime 1 first semester, Maritime 2 second semester.
AMSEA Alaska Marine Safety Education Assn. This course is repeatable for additional elective credit but 6 KHS Course Descriptions 2018-19 requires teacher approval. Students will explore in-depth fisheries issues including business management, vessel and gear maintenance, wheel house technology (radar, GPS, plotters, etc.) as well as review and participate in onboard safety training. Students will also participate in preparation for U.S. Coast Guard licensing exams which include Nautical Rules of the Road, Advanced Plotting and Maritime Law. Students will also have the opportunity to become PADI Scuba certified. Educational experiences will take place in the classroom as well as on the high school vessel, K-HI-C. This class is a two-period class in student schedules.
