Welcome to Peterson Elementary!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! It is with great pride and excitement that I write this letter to you as the Principal of Peterson Elementary. To families who are returning, welcome back! To families new to Kodiak and our school, welcome!
I have been proud to be a Peterson Puffin for nineteen years. I began volunteering when my daughter started first-grade here in 2001. It wasn’t long before I started working as a substitute teacher. I earned my Masters of Arts in Teaching and worked as a Second-Grade Teacher for two years before moving to Kindergarten. I worked as an Instructional Coach, supporting our amazing teachers before stepping into the role of Principal. I earned my Masters of Education in Educational Leadership in 2017.
I am truly honored to have the opportunity to work alongside our amazing, and dedicated teachers and staff. We will work hard to continue our tradition of success by building strong relationships with parents, students, and community partners. We are excited to begin working with your children and look forward to the work we will do together. When parents and teachers communicate and work together effectively, it can significantly impact each student's long-term success. We will celebrate their successes and support them through challenges. We will encourage them every day to let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school.
You will hear a lot about our district's and school's focus on reading, math, and social-emotional learning. We are excited about our literacy program ARC, American Reading Company, which will help us to support and engage our students in reading. Engaged readers inspire! Engaged readers grow! We use Bridges II Math, a hands-on conceptual math program to help students build an understanding of mathematics. Each day every classroom will hold morning meetings. The focus of these meetings is to build community, encourage respectful learning, and build trust. We will have ongoing conversations about literacy, math, and social-emotional learning throughout the year. We hope you will be an active part of these conversations. Traditionally we welcome and encourage volunteers into our building. However, due to the COVID 19 virus, we are not allowing volunteers or visitors into our building in order to provide a safe space for our students and staff. Thank you for your support.
Mrs. Michelle StClair, M.Ed.
