Welcome to Peterson Elementary!

  • Peterson Elementary School is located near the U.S.C.G. Integrated Support Unit in Kodiak Alaska.  We are one of four elementary schools supported by the Kodiak Island Borough School District.  We serve students from the Bells Flats Community and the Coast Guard Base.  Currently, we have 269 students enrolled in grades K-5.  We host two developmental preschool classrooms and the district autism program. We offer students many unique opportunities to excel and explore their talents by being involved in; band, chorus, guitar, orchestra, gardening, spelling bee, geography bee, battle of the books, character counts, and reading counts.  We are focused on continuous improvement and offer students the opportunity to excel through our enrichment programs.  We provide academic support and interventions to ensure that all students succeed in their academic career.  At Peterson, we intervene, we accelerate, and we inspire!

The Peterson Staff recognizes the importance of accepting each child as a unique and valuable individual.  We are committed to working in partnership with families to provide a program that addresses the academic, social, physical and emotional needs of students.  Our hope is for students to develop as productive individuals, compassionate citizens, effective problem solvers and life-long learners.

We believe that all students can learn, that student ownership of their learning process is essential, that family involvement in our school is essential, that literacy skills in reading, math, and technology are basic requirements for participation in today’s world and that all intelligences have equal worth.

We believe in supporting students with positive praise and encouragement through the positive behavior support model.  We support the Kodiak Initiative for Developing Safe Schools (K.I.D.S.S) and have adopted four universal beliefs that serve as an essential component of our Peterson philosophy.  We believe that in all situations, students should remember to be safe, be respectful, be responsible and always be a learner.
