Athletics and Activities

  • The Kodiak Island Borough School District offers a wide range of athletic and extra-curricular activity opportunities for students.  We believe that extra-curricular activities, like sports and clubs, have a positive impact on students both inside and outside of the classroom.

Waking up this morning to a beautiful, frosty white April day is not what I was anticipating.  It is absolutely beautiful out with all of the white snow, but I am sure I am not the only one who is ready for winter to be over.  We have had more snow this winter than I can remember having in the last decade.  It is a beautiful day to get out, take a walk and enjoy the splendor of this island.

I want to take time today to talk about our DDF (Drama, Debate, and Forensics) students.  Our Kodiak Shakesbears had another amazing year! This year the team, as a group, brought home first place at the Juneau state championship that was held in February.  They took first place in Drama and Forensics, and placed second in Debate.

The Shakesbears, coached by Jared Griffin, competed against 20 schools in Juneau, bringing 14 state-qualifying performers and speakers with 20 different performance pieces in nine separate events.  Twelve pieces and 12 students represented Kodiak in the finals in seven of those events, a ratio not accomplished by other schools.

Kodiak had four students qualify for Nationals which were set to take place this June in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  What an accomplishment for these students!  Felix Lewis qualified in Humorous, Derek Rocheleau in Oratin, Acacia Birbilas in Dramatic, and Weitherleigh Griffin in Duo Interp.  Lewis, Rocheleau, and Griffin are all seniors this year and Birbilas is a Junior.  What an amazing achievement for these four students. I am saddened they won’t be able to show off their talents at Nationals but am proud of them all, and I look forward to what they accomplish as they become young adults.  Kodiak High School is lucky to have witnessed their talents.

Well done to all of the Kodiak Shakesbears, and a huge congratulations to the four who qualified for Nationals.
