Recent Incident

On Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 8:30 a.m., Peterson Elementary received a notice from USCG Military Police to assume “lockdown” status. All students and teachers remained in a safe, secure setting for the morning period. The office staff maintained phone lines, placed notices on exterior doors, and maintained contact with KIBSD Central Office and USCG Military Police. At 11:00, we assumed a “locked in” status and provided restroom breaks and delivered lunches to classrooms. Throughout the day, teachers and staff members continuously supervised students; all students remained safely in their classrooms. USCG Military Police closely monitored Peterson Elementary school grounds throughout the day, as we continued to receive updated information concerning our status.
The students and staff at Peterson Elementary responded quickly and effectively in keeping students calm, safe and comfortable. Students were able to participate in activities within their classrooms, under close supervision. Peterson Elementary remained in a locked in status for the reminder of the day and students were escorted to their buses/ cars at dismissal times.
Other town schools were also directed to go into a “lock-in” status for a period of time during the day and were released from that based on advice from local law officials. Faculty and students followed safety drill procedures and remained calm. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone for being patient and understanding as we followed safety procedures and took precautions throughout the day.
