‘March Madness’ comes to Kodiak with 2017 Region III 4A NLC Basketball Tournament By Noelle H. Lowery
“March Madness” will be in full effect this week in Kodiak as the 2017 Region III 4A Northern Lights Conference Basketball Tournament is played at Kodiak High School, March 9-11.
The 4A Northern Lights Conference includes Colony, Kenai Central, Kodiak, Palmer, Soldotna and Wasilla high schools.
Both Kodiak boy’s and girls' basketball teams will defend their home hard court in the six-team bracket regional tournament. The KHS boy’s team finished third in the NLC with a conference record of 6-4 and an overall record of 14-7. The Lady Bears battled through a tough season, finishing in sixth place.
The tournament schedule will alternate between boy’s and girls’ games, with games 1-4 being played on Thursday, March 9, and games 5-10 being played on Friday, March 10. Both NLC regional championship games will be played on Saturday, March 11.
Schedules for games 1-4 on March 9 are as follows:
Kenai vs. Palmer at 3 PM (boys)
Kenai vs. Palmer at 4:45 PM (girls)
Kodiak vs. Soldotna at 6:30 PM (boys)
Kodiak vs. Soldotna at 8:15 PM (girls)
The winners will go on to play against Wasilla and Colony on March 10, with loser bracket games also being played that day. An award ceremony for conference awards will be held on Friday, March 10, after the 7:15 PM game concludes.
Winners of the tournament will go on to play in the 2017 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 3A/4A Basketball State Championships, March 23-25, at Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of University of Alaska Anchorage.
